I long to live between mounts diverging,
surrounded by snowcapped pines
and grizzled owls perching,

Stone slants up and down in jagged lines,
the air freezes in an early pastel sky
and campfire smoke furls up in vines.

I’ll settle there, under branches wry,
with forts and angels of snow to build
and a cedar cabin standing nigh.

Yes, I’ll settle there, where my bones are chilled
where caribou call out for their wandering calves—
oh, between the mounts, I’d be thrilled!
For that is where I’d find my other half.
